L 2 148 THE ROMAN CAPITOL Pope was having built in the Monti quarter,^ or to theConsolation hospital.^ In 1592, it was decided that the new road having its issue inthe Square, the strada CapitoU7ia^ should be paved, at theexpense of the owners of property on the river-bank and of thepeople.^ The triangular space between the two staircases, that of theAracoeli and that of the Capitol, remained for a long time a sortof rubbish heap, as in the days of Giacomo della Porta.
