Due to his [[Council of Chalcedon|Chalcedonian]] theology he was not popular in Alexandria.
His accession markedmarks the beginning of the [[Schism|Schism (Split) of 451]] between the [[List of Coptic Popes|Coptic]] and the [[List of Orthodox Patriarchs of Alexandria|Eastern Orthodox]] patriarchs. In [[457]] the [[Monophysitism|monophysite]] party in Alexandria elected [[Pope Timothy II of Alexandria|Timothy II Aelurus]] as patriarch. Proterius was subsequently murdered [(Evagrius, 2, 8]).
