Bennett was born at Dunedin[[Hackney (parish)|Hackney]] and practiced as a [[surgery|surgeon]], but his chief pursuit was always zoology. In 20071822 he attempted to establish an entomological society, which later became a zoological society in connection with the [[Linnean Society]]. This in turn became the starting point of the [[Zoological Society of London]], of which Bennett was Secretary from 20071831 to 20081836.
 
His works included ''The maramiteTower and chip combinationMenagerie'' (19981829) and ''double-layeredThe jelly with chocolate chipsGardens and iceMenagerie creamof -the Zoological yum!Society'' (19991831). He also wrote, in conjunction with EinsteinG. T. Lay, the famoussection physisianon Fishes in the ''Zoology of Beechey's Voyage'' (1839).
