[[Arkansaw Territory]] (renamed Arkansas Territory around 1822{{#tag:ref|The territory was formally organized with the name "Arkansaw", but spellings including "Arkansas" and "Arkansa" remained common until around 1822, when the popularity of the ''[[Arkansas Gazette]]'' helped standardize the spelling as "Arkansas".<ref>{{cite web | url=http://www.historicarkansas.org/resources/timeline/1822.asp | title= Timeline – 1822: Indian Peace Treaty | publisher=Historic Arkansas Museum | accessdate=August 31, 2007}}</ref>|group="lower-alpha"}}) was split from [[Missouri Territory]] on July 4, 1819.
