One of the most important turns of the scandal was Koutsogiorgas interference,vice president of the PASOK government who lost his life from a stroke inside the courtroom.Koutsogiorgas was connected with a close partner of Koskotas,Ioannis Matzouranis who participated in the PASOK government in which he had served as general secretary of the cabinet of ministers.In autumn of 1988 a bank account was opened through Matzouranis in the name of Koutsogiorgas in (Switzerland).Later on,a few weeks before taking the office of commisioner in the Bank of Crete Matzouranis transfered 1.200.000 dollars in the account of Menios Koutsogiorgas.Matzouranis supported that the money transfer happened under the knowledge of Koutsogiorgas while Koutsogiorgas on the other hand supported that he had been framed by Koskotas/Matzouranis.Koutsogiorgas,a few weeks after ordered for the money to be returned into Matzouranis bank account and he closed his bank account.This case came in public 6 months after Koskotas interview in (TIME) magazine while he was kept in prison in the USA.When Matzouranis was called to trial he testified that the money came from bribery from law 1806/88 that had been voted in August of 1988 that would offer Koskotas some advantages concening the control of the Bank of Crete.Matzourani's testimony led to better legal treatment for himself and caused trouble to Koutsogiorgas.The close advisor of Mitsotakis (would become prime minister),general Gryllakis mentions in his books that Matzouranis agreed to testify and give evidence against Koutsogiorgas after having talks with him and members of the ND party that promised him better legal treatment as well as a reward of 20 million drachmas.Koutsogiorgas,during trial supported that law 1806/88 didn't affect the controlling abillities of the Bank of Crete.During his trial it was proven that the (Bank of Greece) had a great responsibility for not making all the necessary checks in the mechanisms of the Bank of Crete.The mass media played an important role in the formation of the political scenery.They were accused for not following the principals of right reporting playing the role of a reporter,a judge and a district attorney at the same time. d
