<!-- Biography

Lievin van Lathem comes from a family originally from Laethem-Sainte-Marie, south of Ghent, his brother Simon was born in this parish. He is the son of a Leo or Louis van Lathem reported as master artist by some archival documents. He noted in another document be 54 years in 1492, so it is probably born around 1438. He is admitted very young to the painters' guild in Ghent October 30, 1454

He entered the service of Philip the Good to 1456. Subsequently, he worked probably for his son Charles the Bold, although it does not appear in the Duke of accounts, including the achievement of a prayer book now in the Getty Center and the first phase is paid in 1469. He painted at the same time books for Louis de Gruuthuse then Froissart Chronicle for the bastard of Burgundy

Conflicts with members of the guild of Ghent for refusing to pay the bills for the acquisition of the franchise business, he left the guild in 1459 and joined the Antwerp in 1462. He may have made a living to Utrecht in the meantime. He settled in Antwerp, where he remained until the end of his life in 1493. He married Antoinette Meyster, daughter of Jacques Meyster, an illuminator and bookseller from Amsterdam installed long in Flanders and admitted as master of the guild of the city in 1457

In 1468, he participated in the decoration of the festivities scene of a meeting of the Order of the Golden Fleece and the marriage of Philip the Good and Margaret of York in Bruges. On this occasion, he is one of the highest paid artists with Jacques Daret and Vrancke van der Stockt particular. At the head of a studio installed, it seems to lead a prosperous life, many financial transactions mentioned in the archives attesting. He became sworn guild in 1479. At the end of his life, he entered the service of Maximilian Habsburg in 1487 as a valet and painter to the king, loads he held until 1490 at least. It is then rather painter qu'enlumineur table, explaining that no manuscript of this last period is retained

He trains his son, Jacob van Lathem, perpetuating his studio but no thumbnail was identified. Another of his son also called Lievin is goldsmith and engraver. They have both valet chamber as Philip the Handsome and follow him on his journey to Spain in 1501 -->
