Gilbert, καθηγητής στο τμήμα της Φιλοσοφικής του York University, στο [[Τορόντο]], έχει παρουσιάσει το δικό του ορισμό: "Cross-dresser είναι το άτομο που αυτοπροσδιορίζεται με το βιολογικό του φύλο και φοράει ρούχα του αντίθετου φύλου επειδή απλά είναι του αντίθετου φύλου." Ο ορισμός δεν καλύπτει άτομα που "φορούν ρούχα αντίθετου φύλου για άλλους λόγους," όπως "γυναίκες περφόρμερ που το κάνουν για βιοπορισμό, ηθοποιούς, ανθρώπους που το κάνουν για μασκάρεμα κ.ο.κ. Τα άτομα αυτά κάνουν cross dressing αλλά δεν είναι cross-dresser." Οι cross-dresser δεν είναι απαραίτητο να ταυτίζονται με το αντίθετο φύλο, ούτε υιοθετούν συμπεριφορές ή πρακτικές του αντίθετου φύλου και γενικά δεν επιθυμούν να αλλάξουν κάτι στο σώμα τους ιατρικά. Η πλειοψηφία των cross-dresser είναι ετεροφυλόφιλα άτομα.
