* Η θεολογική εγκυκλοπαίδεια The Anchor Bible Dictionary (The Interpreter's Dictionary of the Bible) κάνει φανερή την ασάφεια που καλύπτει την ανάπτυξη της συριόφωνης Χριστιανικής εκκλησίας κατά τους πρώτους αιώνες της.
: "The earliest translation appears to have been in Latin. [...] In the Syriac–speaking world of the East, a gospel tradition in the fourfold gospel form would appear to be attested fairly late, by comparison with the Latin: this is due to the creation in the 2d century C.E. of a gospel harmony by the apologist TATIAN, a Syriac speaker by birth, who introduced his work, known generally as the DIATESSARON, among his fellow Syriac speakers. The influence of this harmony upon the gospel text in Syriac was all-pervasive, even when a fourfold gospel form was adopted. [...]
:: "A. The Mythology of Origins.
: Theories about the origins of Christianity in Syriac-speaking regions have focused on Edessa. Most scholars suspect that some Christian evangelistic activities were carried out there during the 1st century of the Christian era. [...] The theory recurring in early Syriac literature is that Edessa and territories to the east (as far as India) were evangelized by the Apostle Thomas. This datum is found in various 4th-century writers including Ephrem of Syria".

* Ο συμπληρωματικός τόμος της εγκυκλοπαίδειας Λεξικό της Βίβλου του Ερμηνευτή (The Interpreter's Dictionary of the Bible) αναφέρει ότι ένα μέρος των συριακών εκκλησιών έφτασε τον 4ο αιώνα να έχει κανόνα Καινής Διαθήκης με 22 βιβλία:
: "Toward the end of the fourth century a significant portion of the Eastern church used a twenty-two book NT, omitting Revelation, II, III John, II Peter, and Jude. In Syria, Tatian's Diatessaron was read instead of the fourfold gospel. About A.D. 400 the Apostolic Constitutions listed all of our twenty-seven books except Revelation but added I and II Clement. This canon was ratified at the Quinisextine Council at Constantinople in 692. In the West a council at Hippo (393) adopted a NT list like ours except for its separation of Hebrews from Paul's letters. In 397 a synod at Carthage issued a similar NT list but provided that martyrdoms could be read on the anniversary of the martyrdom. The Carthaginian council (419) repeated the enactment but shifted Hebrews into the

: "Scholars have differed over the relationship of this Old Syriac tradition to the Diatessaron, some holding to the position that the Old Syriac tradition is older and a source for the Diatessaron, others arguing that the Diatessaron was the first Gospel text in Syriac, and was used in the creation of the Old Syriac Gospels. The former position was common at the turn of the century but has been all but abandoned more recently in favor of the latter. This does not mean that the Old Syriac Gospel tradition was simply a disharmonized copy of the Diatessaron. [...] The Old Syriac Gospels preserve some authentic Diatessaronic readings, and it is on the basis of this widely accepted idea that the Old Syriac Gospels stand as important witnesses to Italian's original text. [...] Vogels, on the other hand, believed he had found numerous examples of harmonistic readings in the Old Syriac Gospels, and he took this as evidence that the Diatessaron stood first and influenced the Old Syriac separated Gospels. [...] Nevertheless, the modern scholarly consensus is to understand the Diatessaron as the first Gospel text in Syriac and as having influenced the later Syriac Gospels. [...] We can plainly see how the Syriac tradition underwent a process of greater conformity to the Greek New Testament, from the Diatessaron, which I will argue is most unlike the Greek, through the Old Syriac and Peshitta, to the slavishly literal Harklean. This movement is well documented in Kiraz's comparative edition of the Syriac Gospels, which will become an indispensable tool for Syriac Gospel study. [...] Ephrem was a fourth-century theologian of the Syriac church who wrote numerous poetic and theological treatises, among which was an extended commentary on Tatian's Diatessaron. Where Ephrem provides the full text of the passage he is commenting on, he is an important early witness to the Diatessaron's text.

: "'The Gospel... and the Epistles of Paul... and the Acts of the twelve apostles ... these books read ye in the Church of God, and with these read not others'. This was in the Syriac Church of Edessa, and belongs to the latter half of the fourth century when the Catholic Epistles were still not included in the Canon. [...] A translation of the separate Gospels (Evangelion da-Mephallete), which we call the '<nowiki/>Old Syriac, was made (about AD 200), but it does not seem to have had much vogue, and remains to us only in two somewhat different manuscripts. The Diatessaron was completely put aside, first by Rabbula (411-35), who, though he continued quoting sometimes from older manuscripts, substituted in Edessa his own revision known as the Peshitta, containing the separate Gospels, and a rather larger Canon than had been recognized by the Syriac-speaking peoples; and secondly, by Theodoret of Cyrrhus (423-57), who 'swept up more than two hundred copies of it in the churches of his diocese, and introduced the four Gospels in their place'. [...] Further East, however, the history of the Canon was very different. In the Syriac-speaking churches, till early in the fifth century, no advance was made on the primitive Canon— Gospels, Acts, and Pauline epistles (see Doctrine of Addai, quoted on p. 335). But the Syriac version known as the PESHITTA omitted from our New Testament books only 2 Peter, 2, 3 John, Jude, and the Apocalypse. This was the work of Rabbula, who was Bishop of Edessa from 411 till his death in 435 and organized and regulated the Syriac-speaking churches. The great probability of this origin of the Peshitta, as against the much earlier date which used to be assigned to it, is demonstrated by Burkitt (Evangelion da-Mepharreshe, vol. ii, ch. 3.), who shows that before Rabbula there is no trace of the Peshitta in Syriac writings, and hardly a trace of any other writings after him. [...] The Canon of Antioch is indicated by the writings of CHRYSOSTOM, its bishop at the close of the fourth century, and THEODORET, Bishop of Cyrrhus in Syria (423-57), who nowhere quote the books which the Peshitta omitted. And Constantinople inherited the same tradition, the Synopsis scripturae sacrae, found among the works of Chrysostom, omitting the same books. They were still omitted from the catalogue of EBED-JESU, a Nestorian bishop at the beginning of the fourteenth century. [...] At the beginning of the fifth, or the end of the fourth, century, Syria made an advance upon the Canon of Chrysostom and Theodoret. In the writing known as the Apostolic Constitutions, (A composite work, probably by the author of the pseudo-Ignatian epistles, based upon the Didascalia, the Didache, and other material.) traditionally ascribed to Clement of Rome, the concluding section is known as the APOSTOLIC CANONS, the last of which consists of the Canon of the Old and New Testaments. The latter includes all our books except the Apocalypse, with the addition of 1, 2 Clement, and was afterwards ratified by the Quinisextine Council at Constantinople in 692. For this reason JOHN OF DAMASCUS, in the eighth century, recognized all our present books, but included also the Apostolic Canons in his New Testament".
