==Ιστορία==
Η σχέση μεταξύ του ηλεκτρικού ρεύματος, του μαγνητικού πεδίου και των δυνάμεων γύρω από αυτό διατυπώθηκε για πρώτη φορά από τον Hans[[Χανς ChristianΚρίστιαν ØrstedΈρστεντ]], ο οποίος, το 1820, παρατήρησε ότι η βελόνα μίας πυξίδας απέκλινε από τον βορρά (που έπρεπε να δείχνει κανονικά) όταν τοποθετούταν δίπλα σε κάποιο καλώδιο που διαρέοντανδιαρρέονταν από ηλεκτρικό ρεύμα. Το γαλβανόμετρο χρησιμοποιούταν για τη μέτρηση του ρεύματος χρησιμοποιώντας την παραπάνω παρατήρηση, ενώ η απαραίτητη δύναμη επαναφοράς για την αποκατάσταση του δείκτη στο μηδέν προερχόταν από το μαγνητικό πεδίο της Γης. Έτσι όμως τα όργανα μέτρησης μπορούσαν να χρησιμοποιηθούν μόνο όταν ευθυγραμμίζονταν με το μαγνητικό πεδίο της Γης.
