<ref>http://www.in.gr/2018/03/11/sports/football/oristiki-diakopi-sto-paok-aek-o-iban-sabbidis-eisebale-me-oplo-sto-gipedo/</ref>

The 2017–18 Superleague Greece, or Souroti Superleague for sponsorship reasons,[2] was the 82nd season of the highest tier in league of Greek football and the 12th under its current name. The season started on August 2017 and ended in May 2018. The league comprises fourteen teams from the 2016–17 season and two promoted from the 2016–17 Football League.Contrary to the previous seasons, the playoffs for the Champions League and Europa League spots have been removed with qualification based solely on finishing position.[3]

On 12 March 2018, the Superleague Greece was suspended by Greek government until further notice after the president of PAOK, Ivan Savvidis, stormed[4] onto the field with a revolver attached to his belt during the match between PAOK and AEK Athens (Timeline of events before the game - 24 Feb PAOK 52pts/AEK 50pts, 25 Feb PAOK-Olympiacos suspended before kick-off, 26 Feb Atromitos-AEK 1-1 and PAOK 52pts/AEK 51pts, 4 Mar Asteras Tripoli-PAOK 3-2, AEK-Panionios 1-0 and AEK 54pts/PAOK 52pts, 5 Mar first-instance court sentence PAOK deducted 3pts, game awarded 0-3 to Olympiacos, 2 home games behind closed doors and AEK 54pts/PAOK 49pts, 10 Mar court of appeal sentence 3pts returned to PAOK, game awarded 0-3 to Olympiacos, closed doors penalty suspended and AEK 54pts/PAOK 52pts) on 11 March 2018[5] when referee Georgios Kominis disallowed a 90th minute goal[6] scored by Fernando Varela with a header. The goal was initially credited to PAOK by both the referee who pointed the center spot and the linesman who never raised his flag and ran towards the center. About 10-15 seconds later and while PAOK players were celebrating, linesman Pontikis was approached by AEK players who were protesting and approximately 4 minutes after the goal was scored they altered their decision. The goal was ruled out for offside because at Kominis’ opinion Maurício influenced play by obstructing AEK goalkeeper Vasilios Barkas' line of vision when he jumped over the ball (as can be seen in the video of the game when explaining to Vieirinha his exact words to PAOK captain were "He jumped in front of the goalkeeper being in an offside position, he influenced play") . Savvidis (wearing a jacket) entered the pitch with few members of his personal guard and Ľuboš Micheľ (former UEFA Elite referee). At first, he ordered his team to leave the pitch but his request was denied by PAOK captain Vieirinha. Afterwards they went close to the referee where Micheľ expressed his complaints about the decision (making a gesture with his hands - probably advising him that if he disallows the goal his refereeing career is over). Leaving the pitch 1 minute after his entry, a tension was built between Savvidis and members of AEK bench and moments later Savvidis took off his jacket and a gun appeared attached to his belt. According to the reactions of everyone involved in the incident (as can be seen in the video of Savvidis’ invasion) nobody in the stadium seemed to have noticed that Savvidis was actually carrying a gun attached to his belt but shortly after, many photos appeared on the internet with Savvidis and his holstered gun. The referee suspended the game and sent the two teams to the dressing rooms. Savvidis tried to enter into the referees' dressing room (as can be seen in video footage[7]) but he was denied entrance by security and the door was closed. Few minutes later he left the stadium. Kominis’ intention was the game to be continued after 1 hour (and blowed his whistle outside the dressing rooms calling the two teams - as can be seen in video footage[8]) but AEK general manager Vasilis Dimitriadis approached him and claimed (as can be heard in audio[9]) that the players of AEK were terrified from the incident and could not continue as he felt that their safety was at risk. PAOK vice-president Chrisostomos Gagatsis is heard trying to persuade Dimitriadis to order AEK players to return on the pitch. PAOK goalkeeper Alexandros Paschalakis in an interview[10] after the game said "This time, we entered the pitch, for 90 minutes we were there and we scored. But these things that happen in our country drive us back and not forward. It was clearly a legitimate goal. The referee and the linesman went towards the center spot. We celebrated for 10-15 seconds and suddenly happened what you all saw, i don't know why. What i know is that on the pitch we are better. We demonstrated that here on our home ground, we dominate. With a legitimate goal i personally believe and based also from what i saw on TV, we took the lead. Now, why the game wasn't concluded i don't know. A winner must be decided on the pitch. All these that happen every week are not pleasant. What can AEK players say? They are looking for their own good. But the truth must be shown. And the truth is that Maurício is behind the goalkeeper and did not influence play as we saw and as himself told us. Now, how they ruled that goal out for offside, what can we say. I saw too that our president invaded the pitch and it wasn't nice. He told us to leave the pitch but we all stayed. AEK left and things are the way they are". AEK midfielder Panagiotis Kone in an interview[11] after the game said "The referee called Simões and Vieirinha and he ruled the goal out for offside, i was there, i heard it. Vieirinha was pissed off and in came Savvidis threatening the referee with his gun. Kominis went into the dressing rooms, probably he was afraid and after 1 hour and a half he told us to go out and play. You can't do this. To play what? 5 minutes? He should have made his decision faster. It was a tough game, the best 2 teams in the league but the game ended in a strange way. Kominis did not inform us as to whether he would count or overturn PAOK goal scored by Fernando Varela in the 90th minute. He told us that we would be informed outside. We were asking him to tell us inside. What's the reason to go out in order to tell us his decision? Things were a bit strange. If i speak like a fan of football i don't think that Savvidis should have invaded the pitch. It was awful. The game was fine. Players know each other. Let the game to be decided on the pitch. I don't understand the referee, he rules the goal out for offside and then Savvidis comes in and he changes his decision. AEK has shown that is a very good team. We won them home and we are better than PAOK. They have good players but they can't withstand the pressure of a title race". Eventually, PAOK were deducted 3 pts (and 2 pts from next season's championship) and AEK were awarded a 0-3 win by court decision. Kominis received a summons to appear at the court hearing but he sent a letter instead explaining that he could not show up due to personal reasons[12]. Ivan Savvidis apologised for his behaviour two days after the game and he was later banned from all football stadiums for three years[13]. Suspension of the Greek Superleague was removed on 27 March by the greek goverment and AEK won the title after 24 years.

It is notable to mention that another home game of PAOK previously on the season (and while they were leading the league table being 2 pts ahead of AEK) was awarded 0-3 to their opponents when Olympiacos' manager Óscar García Junyent was hit by an object thrown from the crowd (reportedly by an unfolding cash register paper roll - as can be seen in video footage[14]) on 25 February 2018[15][16]. Óscar García received medical attention before being taken to a private general hospital (Interbalkan Medical Center). The private clinic where García was taken issued a statement[17] about five hours after the coach was admitted, saying his upper left lip was swollen and skin on the inside of his mouth was injured. "He has sensitivity in the jaw, neck pain, dizziness and nausea" the clinic statement said. García was scheduled to stay at the hospital overnight and PAOK vs Olympiacos game never started. After the incident and outside Toumba Stadium Olympiacos communications chief Konstantinos Karapappas stated[18] "We expected a huge apology from PAOK for what happened and instead we only hear statements. Having heard rumours about paper, i have to say that our coach was hit by a sealed cash register paper roll which is as heavy as a stone. Our issue here is not the medical report but the object that fell onto our coach. A sealed cash register paper roll fell on him, which when thrown from a certain height and distance with a certain force can be a very powerful blow. We are heading to the hospital in a while and i don't know his condition. We will talk about the rest in a short while. Unfortunately, some representatives from PAOK lost control in the dressing rooms, but we are Olympiacos and we are not inhibited when playing away on hostile grounds. PAOK has to meet up with civilization if they want to become a big club". On the other hand, PAOK communications chief Kyriakos Kyriakos reportedly blamed the incident on Olympiacos. "This is a shadow play, a strategy that Olympiacos started implementing even ahead of the game, fantasising about incidents in its friendly media. It was certain tactics from Olympiacos, which eventually didn't work out because there was no injury sustained. The essence is that i was reading in the media about an injury to the eye in an attempt to find out if he was OK. Soon afterwards, there was a cotton dressing applied on the lips and immediately after there were searching for an ophthalmologist. Nevertheless, i wish the man well and to recover soon" Kyriakos said[19]. PAOK manager Răzvan Lucescu's only comment to the press when leaving the stadium was "Cowards"[20]. Óscar García published a statement through social media 2 days after the game saying "I believe nobody was happy that i was hit by this object to the face. I wish nothing had happened because in this case nobody wins but in my opinion we all lose, PAOK, Olympiacos, Greek football and all of us who love the sport. I wish to forget the incident as soon as possible and focus on what i truly enjoy which is making my team day by day to play better on the pitch"[21].
