In Greek mythology Korkyra was the daughter of [[Asopus|Asopos]] river and nymph [[Metope (mythology)|Metope]].

According to myth Poseidon fell in love with beautiful nymph '''Korkyra''', kidnapped her and brought her to a hitherto unnamed island and offered her name to the place: '''Korkyra''' or modern '''Kerkyra''' ([[Corfu]]). Together they had a child '''Phaiax''' after whom the inhabitants of the island were named: [[Phaiakes]], that was then transliterated by the [[Romans]] to [[Phaeacians]] in [[Latin]].
