A '''liaison aircraft''' is a small unarmed [[aircraft]] developed during [[World War Two]] and primarily used by military forces for artillery observation or transporting commanders and messengers. The aircraft were also used for battlefield [[surveillance aircraft|reconnaissance]], air [[ambulance]], column control, light cargo delivery and similar duties. Able to operate from small, unimproved fields under primitive conditions, most liaison aircraft were developed from, or were later used as [[general aviation]] light planes. Today, the [[helicopter]] performs the duties formerly accomplished by liaison aircraft.
