Στις 9 Νοεμβρίου 1989, μετά από μαζικές διαδηλώσεις στην Ανατολική Γερμανία και τη χαλάρωση των περιορισμών στα σύνορα με την Τσεχοσλοβακία, δεκάδες χιλιάδες Ανατολικοβερολινέζοι πλημμύρισαν τα σημεία ελέγχου κατά μήκος του Τείχους του Βερολίνου και πέρασαν στο Δυτικό Βερολίνο. .<ref name="crampton394">{{Harvnb|Crampton|1997|pp=394–5}}</ref> Τμήματα του τείχους γκρεμίστηκαν, οδηγώντας στην [[Γερμανική επανένωση|επανένωση της Γερμανίας]] στις 3 Οκτωβρίου 1990. Εκείνη την περίοδο τα περισσότερα απομεινάρια του τείχους γκρεμίστηκαν.
