Το 2016, ως αποτέλεσμα της κατάρρευσης του εγχειρήματος The DAO, το Ethereum χωρίστηκε σε δύο ξεχωριστά blockchains. O Βιτάλικ Μπουτέριν υιοθέτησε το όνομα Ethereum αφού περιηγήθηκε σε άρθρα της Βικιπαίδειας σχετικά με τα στοιχεία και την επιστημονική φαντασία βρίσκοντας το όνομα, σημειώνοντας ότι «αμέσως κατάλαβα ότι μου άρεσε περισσότερο από όλες τις άλλες εναλλακτικές λύσεις που είχα δει.
