Οι τιμητικοί τίτλοι καλλιτεχνών είναι αριστοκρατικά ονόματα που αποδίδονται στους καλλιτέχνες της μουσικής και παραπέμπουν σε θεούς, ηγέτες, βασιλιάδες και άλλους. Χρησιμοποιούνται πολύ συχνά από τα Μέσα Μαζικής Ενημέρωσης για την αναφορά μεγάλων προσωπικοτήτων της δημοφιλούς μουσικής σκηνής ή από τους θαυμαστές των ίδιων των καλλιτεχνών ως μορφή εκδήλωσης της λατρείας τους και τους θαυμασμού τους προς σ' αυτούς. Τιμητικοί τίτλοι χρησιμοποιήθηκαν στην κλασσική μουσική στην Ευρώπη ήδη από τις αρχές του 19ου αιώνα, με μουσικούς όπως ο Βόλφγκανγκ Αμαντέους Μότσαρτ και ο Γιόχαν Σεμπάστιαν Μπαχ να χαρακτηρίζονται ως "πατέρας της σύγχρονης μουσικής" και ως "πατέρας του πιάνου" αντίστοιχα.[1] Οι τίτλοι ήταν ιδιαίτερα εμφανείς και στον αφροαμερικανικό πολιτισμό στην περίοδο μετά τον αμερικανικό εμφύλιο πόλεμο, ιδίως ως μέσα απονομής κοινωνικής θέσης που είχε αναιρεθεί εξαιτίας της δουλείας[2] και ως αποτέλεσμα της εμφάνισης και καθιέρωσης της jazz και blues μουσικής, συμπεριλαμβανομένου καλλιτέχνες όπως ο Ντιουκ Έλινγκτον και ο Κάουντ Μπέιζι.[3]

Στον αμερικανικό πολιτισμό, παρά την ρεπουμπλικανική ιδεολογία, τιμητικοί τίτλοι έχουν χρησιμοποιηθεί για την περιγραφή ηγετικών προσώπων σε διάφορους τομείς δραστηριοτήτων όπως η βιομηχανία, το εμπόριο, τα αθλήματα και τα μέσα. Οι λέξεις "πατέρας" και "μητέρα" αποδίδονται συνήθως σε καινοτόμες προσωπικότητες ενώ βασιλικοί τίτλοι όπως "βασιλιάς" και "βασίλισσα" χρησιμοποιούνται για την περιγραφή κυρίαρχων προσωπικοτήτων σε ένα συγκεκριμένο χώρο.[4][5] Τις δεκαετίες του '30 και του '40, όταν η jazz και η swing μουσική έλαβαν δημοτικότητα, πολλοί εμπορικοί λευκοί καλλιτέχνες όπως ο Πωλ Γουάιτμαν και ο Μπένι Γκουντμαν έγιναν γνωστοί ως "Βασιλιάς της Jazz" και "Βασιλιάς του Swing" αντίστοιχα, παρά το γεγονός ότι τέτοιου είδους μουσικά είδη έχουν καταγωγή από τον αφροαμερικανικό πολιτισμό.[6] Αυτές οι προσπάθειες δημιουργίας τιμητικών τίτλων στους καλλιτέχνες επεκτάθηκαν στο χώρο της Rock and Roll μουσικής, όταν έκανε την εμφάνισή της τη δεκαετία του '50. Τελικά, αυτός που έμεινε γνωστός με τον τίτλο "Βασιλιάς της Rock and Roll" ήταν ο Αμερικανός καλλιτέχνης Έλβις Πρίσλεϊ.[7][8]

Παρόμοιοι τίτλοι έχουν χρησιμοποιηθεί και για άλλα μουσικά είδη, συμπεριλαμβανομένου της Αρίθα Φράνκλιν η οποία αποκαλέστηκε "Βασίλισσα της Soul" από τον Πέρβις Σπαν το 1968 και έτσι έμεινε γνωστή.[9] Την δεκαετία του '80, καλλιτέχνες όπως ο Μάικλ Τζάκσον και η Μαντόνα αναφέρονταν από όλα τα μέσα και τον Τύπο ως "βασιλιάς" και "βασίλισσα" της Pop μουσικής, κάτι που εξακολουθεί να γίνεται μέχρι σήμερα.[10][11] Πολλές φορές οι τίτλοι μπορεί να αποτελούν μέρος της διαφήμισης ενός καλλιτέχνη ή μουσικού, ή χαρακτηρισμούς που αποδόθηκαν από τους θαυμαστές του.[12] Οι τίτλοι είναι συνήθως είναι γνωστοί σε μεγάλη ομάδα ανθρώπων, γιατί χαρακτηρίζουν τον εκάστοτε καλλιτέχνη και με τι συνδέεται το όνομά του και η μουσική του. Επιπλέον, έχει συμβεί τα μέλη συγκροτημάτων να έχουν ο καθένας το δικό του "ψευδώνυμο" από τον Τύπο όπως στις περιπτώσεις των θρυλικών βρετανικών συγκροτημάτων The Beatles και Spice Girls.
