Piraeus is the terminus for Line 1 of Athens Metro network. The line was inaugarated in 1869. The manufacture dates for the underground train is 1904.
The railway stations of the Piraeus - Athens - Peloponnese line give some of the first examples of industrial architecture in Greece. Piraeus Railway Station was decreed as a 'preserved monument' in 1983.
Piraeus is a major shipping and industrial centre to the south of Athens with a population of 175,697.
