Because the church of Alexandria was largely [[Miaphysitism|Monophysite]] the deposition of Dioscorus, a [[Miaphysitism|Monophysite]], from and the elevation of Proterius, a [[Council of Chalcedon|Chalcedonian]], to the patriarchate was violently opposed.
