She was alleged to have murdered this husband to marry the general Nicephorus}}</ref>. Η Θεοφανώ ήταν γυναίκα λαϊκής καταγωγής, κόρη ταβερνιάρη, που το πραγματικό της όνομα ήταν '''Αναστασώ'''. Σύζυγος του αυτοκράτορα του Βυζαντίου [[Ρωμανός Β'|Ρωμανού Β']] και μετά το θάνατό του σύζυγος του αυτοκράτορα [[Νικηφόρος Φωκάς|Νικηφόρου Φωκά]]. Η Θεοφανώ σε συνεργασία με τον μετέπειτα αυτοκράτορα και εραστή της [[Ιωάννης Τσιμισκής|Ιωάννη Τσιμισκή]] οργάνωσε την άγρια δολοφονία του δευτέρου συζύγου της. Μετά την επικράτηση του Ιωάννη Τσιμισκή όμως, ενοχοποιήθηκε για τη δολοφονία του συζήγου της και εξορίστηκε στα [[Πριγκιπόννησα]]. Όταν αποκαλύφθηκε ότι οργάνωνε συνωμοσία εναντίον του Τσιμισκή και μάλιστα είχε καταφέρει να διαφύγει από την επιτήρηση των φρουρών της, μεταφέρθηκε στον Πόντο. Μετά το θάνατο του Τσιμισκή, οι γιοί της [[Βασίλειος Β']] και [[Κωνσταντίνος Η']] την επανέφεραν από την εξορία, χωρίς όμως να αναμειχθεί ξανά στην πολιτική. Πέθανε στην [[Κωνσταντινούπολη]], ξεχασμένη απ' όλους, αν και στα τελευταία της χρόνια έζησε στην άνεση των ανακτόρων.
