'''Geoffrey Tandy''' was a curator at the British Museum (Natural History) in the early and mid twentieth century, coming from the BBC. He had a difficult time with the museum authorities, but contributed to the museum's herbarium studies. During [[WWII]] the was recruited to [[Bletchley Park]] (BP) his recruiters confusing his study of [[cryptogamism]] for the specialism of [[cryptogramatist]]. The confusion was compounded when a [[classics]] literate scientist [[RV Jones]] was visiting BP, and said innocrently to Tandy, on hearing this story, that 'I expect they think you have a hidden wife'). In [[Greek language|Greek]] (cryptogam is a translation of hidden or secret wife or mate). Tandy was disconcerted, as he had two lovers, one a wife and another a partner.
 
Tandy's knowledge of how to preserve and recover specimens from acqeous environments(acquired at the Natural History Museum) became essential at BP as he had the techniques to recover sea-water damaged German codebooks recovered from from [[U-boats]], and so recover their contents.
