Πολεμικός ελέφαντας

Ο πολεμικός ελέφαντας ήταν ένας ελέφαντας που εκπαιδεύτηκε και καθοδηγούνταν από τους ανθρώπους στην μάχη. Η κύρια χρήση του ήταν να αποδυναμώσει τον εχθρό, να σπάσει το μέτωπο του εχθρού και να προκαλέσει τον τρόμο. Στρατιωτικές μονάδες δημιουργούνταν όταν στρατεύματα τοποθετούνταν πάνω στον ελέφαντα.

Ξίφη από ελέφαντες, ονομάζονται επίσης ξίφη από χαυλιόδοντα, από την Ινδία, είναι ζευγάρια λεπίδων που σχεδιάζονται ειδικά για να μπαίνουν στους χαυλιόδοντες του ελέφαντα.

Ο πολεμικός ελέφαντας έπαιξε κρίσιμο ρόλο σε πολλές σημαντικές μάχες της αρχαιότητας αλλά η χρήση του μειώθηκε μετά την εξάπλωση των πυροβόλων όπλων στα πρώτα χρόνια της νεότερης εποχής. Ο πολεμικός ελέφαντας αργότερα περιορίστηκε σε μη στρατιωτικούς ρόλους, σε εργασιακούς ρόλους και σε τελετουργικές χρήσεις. Ωστόσο συνέχισε να χρησιμοποιείται σε μάχες σε ορισμένα μέρη του κόσμου όπως η Βιρμανία, η Ταϊλάνδη και το Βιετνάμ κατά τον 19ο αιώνα.
