Σύμφωνα με τη δημογραφική έρευνα του Αφγανιστάν, το έτος [[2005]], οι Παστούν αντιπροσώπευαν το 42% του συνολικού πληθυσμού της Χώρας που έφθανε τα 29.928.987. Συνεπώς το 42% του συνόλου του πληθυσμού είναι 12.570.000 Παστούν.<br>
Επίσης με την αντίστοιχη δημογραφική έρευνα του Πακιστάν για το ίδιο έτος οι Παστούν αντιπροσώπευαν το 15,42% του συνολικού πληθυσμού της Χώρας που έφθανε τους 162.400.000 κατοίκους. Το ποσοστό 15,42% του συνολικού πληθυσμού είναι 25.042.080 Παστούν.<br>
Έτσι ο συνολικός πληθυσμός των Παστούν που διέμενε μόνιμα στο Αφγανιστάν και το Πακιστάν, το 2005, υπολογίζεται γενικά σε 37.612.000 (12.570.000 + 25.042.000). Εξ αυτών υπολογίζεται πως 800.000 περίπου Παστούν του Αφγανιστάν, έχουν ήδη
