Τζίμι Κάρτερ: Διαφορά μεταξύ των αναθεωρήσεων

Retrieved February 18, 2011.</ref> που επέτρεπε την θανατική ποινή για τον φόνο, τον βιασμό και άλλα αδικήματα, και να εφαρμόοσθούν δικαστικές διαδικασίες που συμμορφώνονταν με τις μόλις ανακοινωθείσες συνταγματικές απαιτήσεις. Το 1976, το Ανώτατο Δικαστήριο υποστήριξε την νέα εφαρμογή της θανατικής ποινής στη Τζόρτζια για το αδίκημα του φόνου. Στην υπόθεση ''[[Κόκερ εναντίον Τζώρτζια]]'', το Ανώτατο Δικαστήριο αποφάνθηκε ότι η θανατική ποινή ήταν αντισυνταγματική στο να εφαρμοσθεί για το βιασμό.
