The photo is from Ilyustratsia Ilinden - but it was a Bulgarian magazine. I'm not from Polykeraso personally and I knew only the late Blagoy Shklifov from this village - he has written several things about Chereshnitsa I think but I know olny this - Шклифов, Благой. Cheresnitsa (ελληνικά: Πολυκέρασο‎‎ or katharevoussa Πολυκέρασον, up to 1926 Τσερέσνιτσα[1]) is a villages in Aegean Mcedonia, Greece, Vitsi Municipality, Kastoria Prefecture. According to the 2001 census the village has 29 inhabitants.

Georgaphy Επεξεργασία

The village is situated in the southern slopes of the Vich (Vitsi) Mountain 15 km from the nomos centre Kostur (Kastoria). 5 km to the west lies the municipal centre Tiholishta (Tihio), 4 km to the north - Balgarska Blatsa (Oxia) and 4 to the south - Olishta (Melissotopos) and the Sveti Vrach Monastery (Agii Anargiri).

In the Ottoman Empire Επεξεργασία

Chereshnitsa is mentioned in ottoman documents from the secon half of the 15 Century. According to the local legend the chereshnitchani came from the situated in the plain village of Fotinishta (Foteini) fleeing from the turkish oppresion.[2]

In the 19th Century Chereshnitsa is a Bulgarian village in Kostur kaaza of the Ottoman Empire. In Ethnographie des Vilayets d'Adrianople, de Monastir et de Salonique, (issued in Constantinople in 1878 and concerning the population in 1873) Tzérechnitza is mentioned as a village in Kastoria kaaza with 160 households with 550 Bulgarian inhabitants.[3] According to Vassil Kantchov („Македония. Етнография и статистика“) in 1900 Chereshnitsa had 520 inhabitants - all of the Bulgarian christian.[4]

In 1900 all the inhabitants of Chereshnitsa accept the Bulgarian Exarchate. According to Dimitar Mishev, the secretary of the Exarchate, („La Macédoine et sa Population Chrétienne“) in 1905 there were 640 Bulgarian exarchatists and in the village there was a Bulgarian school.[5]

According to the emmmorandum of the Kostur leaders of the Ilinden uprising Vasil Chekalarov, Lazar Poptraykov, Pando Klyasev, Manol Rozov and Mihail Rozov sent to the foreign consuls in Bitolya (Monastir) on the 30th of August all the 80 houses of Chereshnitsa were burnt by Ottoman forces and were killed: Damyan Sulov (50 years), Petar Popov (53), Damyan Bozhkov (59), Hristo Bozhkov (35), Sido Popyarmov (60), Filo Rozov (63), Dine Glavchev (81), Mitre Babchorliyata (73), Siya Babchoreva (50) и Risa Fyanova (28).[6] Chereshnitchani took part in the uprising with there own band lead by German Chikovski. After the uprising 150 people emigrated to Bulgaria.[7]

A Greek statistics from 1905 show Chereshnitsa as a mixed Bulgarian-Greek village with 400 Bulgarian inhabitants and 200 Greek.[8] According to Georgi Bistritski before the Balkan war Chereshnitsa had 120 Bulgarian houses.[9]

The village remained exarchical untul the Balkan war when it was acuired by Greece.

In Greece Επεξεργασία

In 1926 the village was renamed to Polykerason, a translation of the Bulgarian name.[10] Between 1914 and 1919 29 people from Chereshnitsa emigrated to Bulgarian by officail channels, and after 1919 - 1. In the village there were 20 political murders.[11] In 1932 the village had 70 Bulgarophone families, all of them with „pronounced slavic consciousness“.

During the Second World War in Chereshitsa was formed a commettee of the Ohrana.[12] Fn the 21 of August 1944 the village was attacked by Greek partisans of the ELAS who killed 9 people[13]. In 1945 in Chereshnitsa there were 550 Bulgarophones, all of them with „nongreek national consciousness“. During the Greek Civil war the village also suffered much - most of the men and women above 16 were forfully moblised in ELAS and 63 children from the village were taken by the communists outside Greece (the pedomazoma). The village was almost completely abandoned.[14]

After the war there were mass emmigration to Australia, USA and Canada.

Chereshnitsa today Επεξεργασία

Today Chereshnitsa is a small village with only a few residents. In 2006 it was named a "special village" by the Greek cultural ministry for its „architectural, flokloristic and historical significance“. The village has 40 standing houses and only 11 inhabited.[15] The church was built in 1844 and is dedicated to St Nicholas. The gathering of the village is on 20 of May.
