NGC 4318

φακοειδής γαλαξίας στον αστερισμό Παρθένο

Ο NGC 4318 είναι μικρός φακοειδής γαλαξίας[3] ο οποίος απέχει περίπου 72 εκατομμύρια έτη φωτός[4] και βρίσκεται στον αστερισμό Παρθένο. Τον ανακάλυψε ο αστρονόμος Τζον Χέρσελ (John Herschel) στις 18 Ιανουαρίου 1828.[5] Ανήκει στην Ομάδα γαλαξιών Παρθένου W′,[2][6][7][8] που βρίσκεται στο υπόβαθρο του Σμήνους γαλαξιών της Παρθένου.[2] Σημαντικότερο μέλος της ομάδας W′ είναι ο γιγάντιος ελλειπτικός γαλαξίας NGC 4365.[8]

Φυσικά χαρακτηριστικά Επεξεργασία

Ο NGC 4318 έχει μικρό[3] κλασικό εξόγκωμα[9] και στον πυρήνα του υπάρχει αστρικός δίσκος διαμέτρου περίπου 70 ετών φωτός.[10] Έξω από τον αστρικό δίσκο υπάρχει σαφώς ορισμένη περιοχή χαμηλής επιφανειακής φωτεινότητας διαμέτρου περίπου 230 ετών φωτός η οποία περιβάλεται από μεγαλύτερο εξωτερικό δίσκο.[3][11]

Στο εσωτερικό του NGC 4318 υπάρχει υπερμαζική μελανή οπή της οποίας η μάζα εκτιμάται σε τέσσερα εκατομμύρια ηλιακές μάζες.[12][13][14] Επίσης ο γαλαξίας περιβάλλεται από δεκαοκτώ σφαιρωτά αστρικά σμήνη.[15][16]
